The Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) is one of Toronto’s most beloved summer traditions. It has been a yearly tradition for my family since 1947. Every year the EX has happened since the 1920s our family has been there. Each August, the CNE transforms Exhibition Place into a colourful mix of rides, games, shows, and delicious (and sometimes outrageous) food. But between admission, snacks, and attractions, costs can add up fast. Every year it seems to get harder to save money and get to the Ex.

The good news? With a little planning, you can enjoy the CNE without breaking the bank — and still take in all the fun, free entertainment it has to offer. You just have to prepare and plan.

1. Get Your Tickets Early for the Best Price

Buying your tickets before opening day is the easiest way to save. The CNE offers early-bird pricing for both general admission and ride-all-day passes when you purchase online. This can save you up to 40% compared to gate prices.

2. Take Advantage of Discounts

The CNE runs several special promotion days and times:

  • Opening Day Specials – Tickets are significantly cheaper. This year is was $15
  • After 5 p.m. Deals – Reduced admission for evening visits. This year it is $13
  • Warrior’s Day Parade (August 16, 2025) – Free admission for veterans and active Canadian military members (with ID).
  • Kids Pass – Download a free child admission ticket from the CNE website for select days (this option was available until the day before the EX. Kids get in for $2 ON the two full-day Mondays.
  • Presto Perks gave you a discount before the Ex began.

3. Enjoy the Free Entertainment

One of the best things about the CNE? So much is included with your admission — you could spend an entire day without paying for rides or extra attractions.

Live Shows & Performances

  • Bandshell Concerts – Nightly free concerts with well-known Canadian and international artists. This year some of the artisits Shawn Desman, Marianas Trench, Dean Brody and Bishop Briggs as part of the free nightly concert series.
  • Stunt Shows – From motocross tricks to extreme acrobatics and dont forget the wrestling.
  • Buskers – Street performers scattered throughout the grounds.
  • Mythos– is an immersive anthology telling the stories passed down from different cultures.
  • Epic- This year’s ice show with Elvis Stojko.

4. Don’t Miss the Farm at the CNE

The Farm is a family favourite and completely free with admission. You can:

  • See cows, sheep, goats, and horses up close.
  • Watch live farming demos like sheep shearing and butter making.
  • Stroll through the garden and learn about sustainable farming.

It’s a calm, educational break from the midway crowds — and perfect for kids. We love stopping in here mid afternoon.

5. Watch the Canadian International Air Show for Free

The Air Show (August 30 – September 1, 2025) is a must-see, featuring the Canadian Forces Snowbirds and other aerobatic performers.

Money-saving tip: You can watch the Air Show from outside the CNE grounds for free . Popular viewing spots include Ontario Place, Marilyn Bell Park, and along Toronto’s waterfront. You can listen to the show online.

6. Bring Your Own Snacks & Water

While the CNE food building is legendary, it’s not always budget-friendly. Save money by:

  • Bringing your water bottle (there are refill stations).
  • Pack snacks or a light picnic. For our outing, I have a container of snacks.
  • Treating yourself to just one CNE specialty food item. We are limiting ourselves to 2 each and we share.

7. Make the Most of the Special Activities and Activations

Kidsworld offers tons of free, child-friendly fun, including:

  • Live kids’ entertainment and character meet-and-greets.
  • Free games, crafts, and shows.
  • Access to The Farm and animal exhibits.

For adults, there are several free activations by brands and then is the Cooking Demos and the new Crafting workshops.

8. Get There Without Paying for Parking

Parking near the CNE can be $30 or more. Instead:

  • Take the GO Train to Exhibition GO Station.
  • Use the TTC (504A streetcar or 29 Dufferin bus).
  • Park further away and walk in.

9. There are ways to save on Ride Tickets

If you’re on a budget, skip expensive add-ons like the midway games and focus on:

  • The first day of the CNE you could go on 8 rides for $25
  • On Kids Toonie Mondays you can get 75 tickects for $30
  • Buy a bundle and share with friends.

Final Thoughts

The CNE is a Toronto summer tradition you don’t have to skip because of cost. With early-bird tickets, discount days, free entertainment, and some smart planning, you can enjoy a full day (or two) of fun without overspending.

From the thrill of the Air Show to the charm of The Farm and the excitement of Warrior’s Day, there’s something for everyone — and much of it is free with admission. Let me know your favourite part of the CNE and how you save money going.
